OUR LIVES BEGIN TO END THE DAY WE BECOME SILENT ABOUT THINGS THAT MATTER.

- MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.

On January 16th, 2017, Cairá L Conner organized a day of service for Martin Luther King Jr. day as an Americorps member with Playworks. This beautification project offered a unique and relevant teaching opportunity for children at a predominantly African American elementary school to see representations of themselves around their school. The ultimate goal of this project was to engage in a meaningful way to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on what would have been his 87th birthday. King had ties to Chicago, specifically to the south and southwest Black communities like Englewood, where he was working to end redlining and boister a fair housing movement in the city. Spending a day at a predominantly Black school in a Black community to uplift the students and staff was a great way to honor his legacy and encourage a brighter future. Cairá designed all 7 murals to be painted at the event and collaborated with 6 local artists to help direct the mural painting along with volunteers on the day of.
