12.3.15 \\ SAIC Intro to Performance

...an awakening sense of the awesome power of the black imagination: to protect, to create, to destroy, to propel ourselves towards what poet Elizabeth Alexander describes as “a metaphysical space beyond the black public everyday toward power and wild imagination.” How can we be past, present, and future together?

5.10.12 \\ SAIC Intro to Fibers

Set to Nina Simone’s Forbidden Fruit, ‘If I’m In Luck I Might Get Picked Up’ is a confrontation of the foreign perceptions of my body. I feel as if I am expected to be this docile (at times hostile), unintelligent, sex fiend. These expectations were created out of the deeply rooted fears of unknown black bodies hundreds of years ago. The solution to these fears became institutionalized racism.

What pre-existing understandings do they feel are just and apply to me? What inaccuracies of the black body are placed upon me? The single empty chair is left for myself. It is my place in the audience as the single black person in the class.
